Loving Our Library

Loving Our Library

Reading is the most important way we learn in school and in life. That’s why we are proud to be joining schools around the world in celebrating International School Library Month.

Organised globally by the International Association of Librarians, this month highlights the value of these amazing spaces, and the hardworking staff and volunteers that make them run. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Fairy Tales and Folk Tales around the World’. You can see what other schools around the world have been doing to celebrate here:

This year, we’re really focussing on literacy and reading in our school. After a year of remote and blended learning, it’s more important than ever to make sure every child is developing their reading skills. Weaker reading and writing skills are often damaging to other important academic and social skills.

At Tregoze, We promote a culture in our school where reading is integral to everything and take every opportunity we can to read to our children and let them read for pleasure as well as listen to them read individually. We ensure children have access to a good variety of books in their classrooms. Time for reading is timetabled carefully in every class in school to include time to listen to readers, read for pleasure and listen to the teacher read, and children are given the freedom to choose their own books.

We use every opportunity to talk about books and celebrate readers and authors. We timetable exciting events across the year to celebrate reading such as Roald Dahl day, World Book Week, Poetry day, Black History Month, Author day’s etc.

We set fun reading challenges for children to complete at home with their parents such as the Bookopoly challenge, and also celebrate reading success in our classes (Effort Cup/ Top 5 Readers and in Assemblies where certificates are awarded)

We're also going to be organising a Sponsored read to raise money for new books for our school next term.

Reading at home also gives children a huge advantage, and if you would like to borrow books to enjoy with your children at home, please talk to your child’s teacher!

We are excited to recognise this event and to celebrate librarians as we continue to promote the link between literacy, creativity, and academic progress.
